Weekly Learning Goals: Q3W3

Weekly Learning Goals
Q3W3

Reading

We will be using adjectives and adverbs, learning to choose between them depending on what is to be modified. We are reading the book, "My Name is Yoon", a story about a little girl from Korea. We will be learning how to look up words we do not know in the dictionary as well as utilizing other strategies for difficult words.

Vocabulary: wisdom, symbols, settled, wrinkled, patient, suddenly, Korean, shining (does not mean like the sun) but students will look at multiple definitions and decide which one makes most sense in context.

Writing

The students are continuing to have daily paragraph editing practice (learning the various symbols for editing a piece of written work.)

Our daily writing prompt will be (opinion), "Which pet is the right one for you?" We will be learning more about writing introductions for opinion writing.

Social Studies

We will be talking about the government and the different branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial).

Math

We are continuing reteaching and learning more about bar graphs and picture graphs. Quite a few of us struggled with the concept of using data and turning it into bar graphs or reading bar graphs and that is OKAY! We have another week to go over it, ask questions, and master this skill!

Science

Last week we were learning all about solid, liquid, and gas. We are continuing learning about this, but introducing a new concept "volume".

Weekly Learning Goals

Q3W2

I hope everyone had a restful long weekend. During this 4 day week, we will be working as hard as usual! In reading we are reading The Story of the Statue. The Padawans should have some familiarity with the Statue of Liberty, since we did learn about American Symbols last quarter. Grammar we are discussing changing adjectives to adverbs  (i.e. quick to quickly, etc.)

In writing, we are discussing our D.R.E.A.M (desire, remembered, equality, america, movement.) We will be writing "I Have a Dream" speeches, just like Martin Luther King Jr.

In social studies, we are continuing discussion about immigration and coming to America.

In math, we are continuing learning about data and graphing (collecting, organizing, and displaying data.)

In science, we are continuing our study about the different forms/states of matter -- solid, liquid, & gas.

Weekly Learning Goals Q3W1

Weekly Learning Goals

Q3 W1

Welcome back, Padawans! I hope you had a restful winter vacation. I know that I did! =) This week in reading, we will be reading the story "Dragonflies" on Reading A-Z. We are focusing on comprehension strategies, acknowledging when we're confused by text, and learning how to figure out what we're reading. I am also teaching them how to use text to find the most important information and highlight it to better find the information at a later date.

In writing we are continuing opinion writing. Because we are now focusing on paragraph editing skills every morning for morning work, it'll better prepare us for being better writers as well. This week's topic is "Why my winter vacation was the best!" They will need to create a wonderful introduction sentance that states their opinion, provide at least 4 reasons to support their opinion, detail, linking words, and a great conclusion that reinstates their opinion.

In social studies we are still talking about Ellis Island and immigrants.

Math we are learning all about collecting data and visual representation of our data using graphs (specifically line plots.)

Science - Oh boy! This is a fun week as we learn and explore different properties/states of matter, such as liquid, solid, and gases.
