Weekly Learning Goals Q2W7

Welcome back, Padawans! I hope you had a restful Thanksgiving! We're getting back into the grind as we only have a FEW weeks left of the quarter!

In reading we will be reading a story from our in class textbooks, called "A Harbour Seal Pup Grows Up" by Joan Hewitt. We will continue discussing and discovering various text features as well as comparing and contrasting the information we find to a news article about a baby seal who gets stuck in mud! We are also working on reflexive pronouns and we will be able to master that skill by ourselves! (See what I did there?) ;) We are starting the week out by taking our summative on narrative writing and then continue on to opinion writing. In Math we will continue expanded form & place value and finalize this unit this week. Social studies we will be starting a very exciting few weeks and working in group to work on our first research projects -- different countries around the world! I cannot wait to see what they end up presenting to the class! Finally in science, we are still continuing our matter unit. Whew! Who would have thought matter was so detailed!

We will have our language arts VLT assessments and our math VMT assessments coming up at the end of the quarter. To help study for the math VMTs work on iXL at home, 20 minutes, a few times a a week. Focus on money, time, and place value. Also go back and look at measurement skills, basic addition, and word problems.

Weekly Learning Goals Q2W6

This is a very short week this week, just 2 days! We will be reading The First Thanksgiving and learning about the differences about the first Thanksgiving and the Thanksgiving that we celebrate today. In writing, we are continuing and finalizing our dolphin stories from last week and continuing our narrative exploration. We'll be a turkey and talk about how we plan to escape the Thanksgiving dinner table! In Social Studies we will put ourselves in the positions of early immigrants to Ellis Island and discuss what we would bring with us, if we only could fit it in a suitcase. Math we will continue learning about place value, but with an emphasis on expanded form. Finally, in science, we are coninuing learning about the different properties of matter (color, texture, buoyancy, size, weight, and shape.)

This week we are reading Anca's Journey, a girl who travels overseas to Ellis Island. Needless to say, we are also studying about Ellis Island and early immigration via Ellis Island as well. We will be studying and starting narrative writing this week! In math, we will be focusing on place value.  In science we are starting to learn all about the properties of matter.

Quarter 2 Week 4

Week of November 5th

This week we study The Wall by Eve Bunting in Reading. The Wall is a wonderful book about Veteran's Day. We finish up our classroom book, "Living the Dream" this week (so make sure to turn in your forms by Thursday, November 9th). I know I had previously said the 10th, but there is no school on Friday due to Veteran's Day! In Social Studies, we are learning about Ellis Island and the history of American Immigration. Math, we are starting our place value unit, and finally, in Science, we are finalizing our weather unit by learning about severe weather!

Reading:

• SIPPS Challenge Lesson 30, 31, and 32.
• Reading : The Wall by Eve Bunting, The White House
• Grammar: take sentences from The Wall and model how to rearrange/expand them orally; allow students to try after. For example: “But I’d rather have my grandpa here, taking me to the river, telling me to button my jacket because it’s cold.” Can become:“It’s cold, and I wish my grandpa were here to tell me to button my jacket.”
• Have students take lined paper and have them write 5 questions about the story for a neighbor to answer (make sure some questions include characters/setting/plot). Make sure to have students skip lines. Have them switch papers with a partner; the partners will write the answers to the questions in the blank lines between each question. Using the story as a basis, discuss as a group why it is so important to remember and honor veterans.
• Read The White House and discuss key terms using question words.
• Grammar: type short, choppy sentences using Mimio as students watch (“the girl ate a donut,” “the boy played soccer,” etc). Model expanding sentences first; then write more for students to expand. Using individual whiteboards, have students expand your sentences by adding detail words (“the preschooler girl snuck a donut out of the box when her mom wasn’t looking and ate it quickly,” “the little red-haired boy happily ran down the field after the soccer ball, because playing soccer was his favorite sport”).
