READING

Our Goals

  • SS.2.C.1.2: Explain the consequences of an absence of rules and services.
  • LAFS.2.RL.1.1. Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in text.
  • Participate in Class Bonding experiences and practice center rotations. 
Activities
  • Listen to read-aloud of Officer Buckle and Gloria (to build comprehension) and Character Chat worksheet. Ask Do You Think Officer Buckle and Glorida make a good team? Why or Why or Why not? 
  • Complete graphic organizer, “Story Elements” (character, setting, etc.)
  • Review what we remember about Officer Buckle and Gloria. Ask what pages are in the beginning of the beginning of the book/text? How do they know? Discuss how the beginning introduces the story. What pages are the end of the text? How do they know? What is the purpose of an ending to a text?
  • Re-reading text with partners
  • Discuss class rules and procedures and why they're important.

WRITING

Our Goals
  • LAFS.2.W. 1.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Activities

  • Why do writer’s write? Create an anchor chart about the reasons writers and authors create books, stories, and articles. Explain that authors write to share information. Because we are learning about each other, we are going to share information about ourselves and we are going to interview a friend and they will interview us. 
  • Student interviewing question and answering sessions.
  • Working on rough drafts, final copies, and final presentations.
  • Interview a Friend Presentations

SOCIAL STUDIES

Our Goals
  • SS.A.1.1examine primary sources, including, but not limited to, artifacts, documents, maps and photographs
  • examine secondary sources, including, but not limited to, newspapers, stamps, textbooks, and reference books 

Activities
  • Introduce the concept of “Respect” by creating a bubble chart. What is respect? Who should we respect? (Our parents, Teacher, School, friends, ourselves, our siblings, etc.) How do we show them respect? How do we show them disrespect? 
  • Watch Read Aloud: I Show Respect by David Parker
  • Discuss what “caring” means. Create a bubble chart with caring in the middle. Brainstorm who they care for (parents, siblings, grandparents, teacher, friend, etc.) How do you show these people you care? How would you show these people that you don’t care?
  • Take out “caring” task cards. Have each child draw a card and read it (teacher help may be needed) and they take turns answering those questions. 
  • Self Control – We have discussed respect and caring. But what about self-control? What is it? 
  • Watch Read-Aloud: When Sophie Gets Angry, Really Really Angry. Did Sophie practice self control? How do you know? What should she have done?

MATH

Our Goals

  • MAFS.2.OA.2.2 - Add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
  • MAFS.K12.MP.1.1 - Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • MAFS.K12.MP.7 - Look for and make use of structure.


Activities

  • Math Expectations/Procedures 
  • Introduce the Calendar, Calendar person assists in showing class calendar. Show Calendar Math Booklet they will work on throughout the year.
  • Decorate Math notebook
  • Class discussion on different math strategies used to solve math problems

SCIENCE

Our Goals
  • SC.2.N.1.6 Explain how scientists alone or in groups are always investigating new ways to solve problems.
  • explore how science is used every day
  • explore different types of scientists
Activities
  • Students will be introduced to the big idea of Science through class discussion (i.e. What does science look like? Smell like? Feel like? Sound like? Taste like?), students will decorate their science notebooks based on the responses given.

  • Explain that there are different units of Science (there are many subjects and branches of science. Some study outer space like astronomy. Other sciences study life (biology) or the earth (geology) or even matter and energy (physics).
