READING

Our Goals
  • LAFS.2.RI.2.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.
  • LAFS.2.SL.1.1 - Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
    1. Listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).
    2. Build on others’ talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others.
    3. Ask for clarification and further explanation as needed about the topics and texts under discussion.
  • LAFS.2.RI.1.1Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
  • L.1.2a - Capitalize dates and names of people.
  • LAFS.2.L.3.4 - Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
    • Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
    • Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix is added to a known word (e.g., happy/unhappy, tell/retell).
    • Use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root (e.g., addition, additional).
    • Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark).
    • Use glossaries and beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases.
  • LAFS.2.RI.2.5 - Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
  • LAFS.2.RI.3.7 - Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
  • LAFS.2.W.3.8 - Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
  • LAFS.2.RI.1.2 - Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.



Activities

  • SIPPS Challenge 9
  • Watch video on Netflix,  Planet Earth (Season 1, Episode 11 from 14min to 17:25min)
  • Re-read Deep in the Ocean and discuss title page, table of contents, labels, bold print, captions and diagrams as well as text box, headings, and glossary.  (Features help us understand how the book is organized.)
  • Introducing how to look words up in the dictionary.
  • Discussing diagrams (on pg 6&7) of Deep in the Ocean and how it helps make information easier to understand.

  • Brainstorm product names/holidays/geographic places which students will complete chart with neighbor writing at least 3 items in each column.

WRITING

Our Goals

  • LAFS.2.W. 1.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Activities
  • How to Write a Paragraph PPT (Slides 1-5)
  • 6 Ways to Hook a Reader (Discuss)
  • Fill in Graphic Organizer 
  • How to Write a Paragraph PPT (slides 6-13)
  • Write a Detailed Sentence WS 
  • Create 3 details for class decided topic.
  • Create Rough Draft and work on teacher/student conferences.
  • Write final copies. 
  • Display “writing concluding statements for paragraphs” pdf (pages 3-6) 
  • Introduce the 6 ways to tie up a story, on the worksheet students will write an example for each way to write a conclusion, allow students to share examples.
  • Read the entire paragraph (topic sentence, details, and conclusion sentence) to the class of the topic you all have focused on and using the rubric give a rating for each section.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Our Goals

  • SS.A.1.2 - Utilize the media center, technology, or other informational sources to locate information that provides answers to questions about a historical topic.
  • SS.2.G.1.2 - Using maps and globes, locate the student's hometown, Florida, and North America, and locate the state capital and the national capital.
Activities
  • Review parts of the map (compass rose, symbols, cardinal directions and etc).
  • Discuss that Washington D.C. is not a state, but a territory.

Our Goals
  • MAFS.K12.MP.5.1 Use appropriate tools strategically.
  • MAFS.K12.MP.6.1 Attend to precision.
  • MAFS.2.MD.1.1 Measure the length of an object to the nearest inch, foot, centimeter, or meter by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
