Weekly Learning Goals - Q2W1

Quarter 2 Week 1

**We've made it to Quarter 2!!**

We're reading Jack's Tale this week. Login to KidsA-Z for your child to practice their weekly story (reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary!) We're moving on to learning how to write narrative stories, studying Native Americans, and all about the weather.

Check out the PARENT section at the bottom for some things you can do at home to help your child study!

READING

Our Goals

  • LAFS2.RL.2.6 - Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.
  • LAFS.2.RL.3.9 - Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.
  • LAFS.2.L.3.5 - Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings. Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., describe foods that are spicy or juicy). Distinguish shades of meaning among closely related verbs (e.g., toss, throw, hurl) and closely related adjectives (e.g., thin, slender, skinny, scrawny).

WRITING

Our Goals

  • LAFS.2.W.1.3 - Write narratives in which they recount a well-
  • elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure 

Activities

  • Review Narrative Elements handout. (Monday)
  • Words "spice up" the story. Salsa Words (number each column and play descriptive word charades.) (Monday)
  • Assign topic of the week, "My Magic Beanstalk". (Tuesday)
  • Students will use narrative writing packet to begin brainstorming and writing their rough draft. Reminders to use a topic sentence and a conclusion. (Tuesday)
  • Introduce narrative writing rubric. (Tuesday)
  • Continue rough drafts and student-teacher conferences. (Wednesday)
  • Begin writing final drafts.  (Thursday)
  • Tour Student Treasures and explain they will become writers and to start thinking of something they would all like to write about together. 
Assessment

  • Final copy of narrative story will be assessed via writing rubric. (F)

Our Goals

  • SS.2.A.2.1- Recognize that Native Americans were the first inhabitants in North America.
  • SS.2.A.2.2 - Compare the cultures of Native American tribes from various geographic regions of the United States.

Activities

  • Read through Native American Powerpoint (slides 1-9) (Monday)

  • Read Native American Flipbook and answer comprehension questions. (Wednesday)
  • Students complete Native American Flipbook (Let’s Sort (F) & Let’s Write) independently (Thursday & Friday)

Our Goals

  • MAFS.K12.MP.7.1 - Look for and make use of structure.

  • Read: It's About Time by Cecelia Minden (Epic!)
  • Review skip counting by 10s by writing number sequence on the board:  3, 13, 23, ___, ___, etc. Students explain what comes next and their thinking. Continue with 5's.

  • Explore clock manipulatives (practice moving hour hand and minute hand.)

  • Take students outside to observe the weather and complete weather predictions and fill in weather graph. (Monday)

PARENTS

  • Please read "Jack's Tale" and "The Giant's Tale" every evening with your child and ask them comprehension questions. Discuss vocabulary words you may see in the text.
  • Please work on spelling menu/homework as it helps dramatically for your child to master their spelling words. I have noticed that those who haven't completed their homework, haven't done as well, while those who have -- have done extremely well.
